Council closes Northgate emergency department in late-night vote

Northgate District Council voted late on Tuesday to close the emergency department at Northgate General and move all urgent cases to Fairvale Hospital, 38 kilometres away. The decision guts a service the town has relied on for sixty years.

Healthcare experts warn that the closure will cost lives. The council's own transport study puts the average journey from Northgate to Fairvale at 41 minutes. For residents in the outlying villages, that is a 300 per cent increase in travel time.

Council leader Margaret Ellery defended the vote as a consolidation of specialist staff, pointing to a £4.2 million shortfall in the trust's budget. Fairvale's emergency department currently treats around 200 patients a day.

Families are being asked to gamble that the ambulance arrives in time. A consultation on the decision opened on Wednesday. Residents have until Friday to submit objections before the plan becomes final.
